A Year in My Humba Hides Boots

A Year in My Humba Hides Boots

There are some purchases that make a good first impression.

Then there are the rare ones that quietly become part of your life.

A year ago, Erma from Humba Hides gifted me a pair of Snugg Boots. At the time, I thought they were beautiful. The leather was soft, the sheepskin lining was warm, and they felt wonderfully comfortable from the moment I slipped them on.

What I didn't realise was that almost twelve months later, I would still be reaching for them almost every day.

Looking down at them now, I can see the story they've collected along the way.

The leather has softened and moulded itself to my feet. The creases tell the tale of thousands of steps. The soles bear the marks of everyday adventures. They no longer look brand new.

They look lived in.

And somehow, I think they look even better for it.

More Than Just Winter Boots

When people hear "snugg boots," they often imagine something reserved for the coldest months of the year.

I thought that too.

What surprised me most about the Snugg Boots was how versatile they turned out to be.

During winter, I wear them upright, enjoying the warmth and comfort of the soft lining. On warmer days, I simply fold the tops down to create a more relaxed look with a little extra airflow around the ankle.

It's such a simple feature, but one I've used constantly.

Cold morning? Roll them up.

Sunny afternoon? Fold them down.

They adapt as easily as the seasons do.

The Comfort Factor

I spend a lot of time on my feet.

Over the years I've worked in veterinary practices, spent hours standing in consultation rooms, walked countless kilometres through shopping centres and markets, and paced my way through more creative brainstorming sessions than I can count.

Comfort matters.

These boots quickly became the pair I instinctively reached for, whether I knew I had a long day ahead or I was enjoying downtime at home, or out-and-about.

The leather softened without losing its shape. The soles gradually moulded to my feet. There was no painful wearing-in period and no battle to make them comfortable.

They simply became more comfortable with time.

In many ways, they feel less like footwear and more like a familiar favourite chair — the one everyone in the house knows belongs to you.

A Companion to Everyday Life

As I sat down to write this article, I realised something unexpected.

Many of my favourite memories from the past year include these boots.

They've accompanied me through early winter mornings while the kettle boiled.

They've padded across cold tiled floors before sunrise.

They've been there during long workdays spent designing websites, writing blog posts, and creating artwork for clients.

In fact, many of the entries in my personal writing project, Secret Reflections, were written while wearing these very boots.

That might sound like a strange thing to notice.

But I think that's what happens when something becomes part of your routine. It stops being an object and starts becoming part of the backdrop against which life unfolds.

The Beauty of Genuine Leather

One of the things I love most about full-grain leather is that it doesn't remain frozen in time.

It changes.

It develops character.

Every crease, every subtle variation in colour, every sign of wear tells part of the story.

The Snugg Boots I wear today don't look exactly like the boots that arrived a year ago.

They're softer.

Richer.

More distinctly mine.

The leather has developed a beautiful patina that only comes from regular use and proper care.

Rather than looking worn out, they look well loved.

There's a difference.

A Small Ritual

Every now and then, I take a little time to care for them.

I pull out a tin of dubbin, settle into a comfortable chair, and gently work conditioner into the leather.

It's become a small ritual I genuinely enjoy.

Perhaps it's because I grew up around horses, but the smell of treated leather still reminds me of tack rooms, saddles, and quiet afternoons spent caring for equipment that was built to last.

There is something deeply satisfying about maintaining an item instead of replacing it.

In a world that often encourages us to throw things away, I find comfort in caring for something that was made to stay.

What One Year Looks Like

The photographs in this article aren't professional product photographs.

They are simply my boots.

The boots that have walked through a year of ordinary days.

The boots that sit beside my bed each night.

The boots that have accompanied me through work, creativity, reflection, and everyday life.

There are scuffs.

There are creases.

There are signs of wear.

And yet they remain one of the most comfortable, reliable, and loved items in my wardrobe.

I think that says more than any polished studio photograph ever could.

Would I Buy Them Again?

Without hesitation.

A year later, I still reach for them almost every day.

They've proven themselves warm, comfortable, practical, versatile, and beautifully made.

More importantly, they've become part of my story. My 17 year old daughter even said yesterday, that I can pull these boots off with anything, they are like my signature style now. That's when I knew I just had to write this article.

And if there's a better compliment for a pair of boots than that, I haven't found it yet.

When I first received my Snugg Boots (left), The same boots, one year later (right).

Looking at these photographs side by side, I'm reminded that good leather doesn't simply survive being worn — it becomes more beautiful because of it.

The boots I wear today aren't the same boots that arrived a year ago. They've softened, moulded themselves to my feet, collected memories, and become part of my daily life.

In a world where so many things are designed to be replaced, there's something deeply satisfying about owning something that grows better with time.

And perhaps that's the biggest reason I would buy them again.

Some things impress you when they arrive.

The special ones are still with you a year later.

These are those boots.
